Arkansas Lightweight Roofs

Weight is an essential consideration when choosing a new roof. Weight affects the structure and safety of the occupants.  A Gerard roof system weighs less than 140 pounds per square (1.5 lb. per sq ft), making it one of the lightest weight roofing options on the market, whereas concrete tile weighs approximately 800 lb. per square. Gerard’s light weight allows homeowners to obtain the appealing look of tile without the extra weight of the concrete tiles and huge expense of adding structural support.

An average house would have additional weight equivalent of 4-5 cars sitting on the roof if concrete tile were installed! The heavy weight of concrete and clay tile roofs make roof collapse a big concern during heavy snowfalls or fire. Concrete tile roof structures may be completely destroyed because firefighters are unable to enter for danger of collapse. Gerard’s wood framework adds shear strength and allows firefighters to walk on the roof to fight a fire.

An engineering report is not required when re-roofing with a lightweight Gerard roof. A Gerard roof is lightweight, strong and securely interlocked to prevent the roof from collapsing during heavy snowfalls or if an interior fire were established.
